For the past couple of years of my life I've been interanally battling with different things in the bible and beliefs in the Christian religion. I am very loose in nature so to be restricted by a book written 2k years ago was sometimes frustrating and confusing to me. So, here is my take on things.
Man loves control. Not men, although that is also true, but mankind. We love to have control and place rules on anything that we feel is not living the way we believe they should. So when God gave us this book of love we turned it into a book that talks of being cast away to burning pits of fire and having to fear a big god that is looming over us at all times. In these times nobody besides the priest were literate and could write so it would be VERY easy, almost too easy, to alter God's word to us with a flick of the wrist. From this point on Christians lived in fear and bounds of someone that would ask you to sacrafice your own child (Abraham and Issac) or await the day that beasts will rise from the sea (Revelations), and if you live wrong... it's off to the firey pit of hell for you.
Personally, the God that I know and talk to would never ask anything so awful of me. God is my maker and my friend and yes I do respect him and have that "fear" like I would have for my parents but not an actual heart of fear that makes me scared of him. Christians these days say "fear the Lord! He is almighty and can do anything at his will! But he is your loving best friend and forgiving." What the hell? This is so contrdictory to me. I cannot even fathom my best friend being this awful scary being they talk about.
If Christiany had been presented as a love relationship and not a book of rules, then I believe that so many more people would be not only willing but anxious to know this God! Why rules? Why do we have to have a set of rules to live by? Here is my rule: Love. That's all. Love God, love people. People these days preach that yet they still judge and resist people different than them. Their words do not align with their actions.
So a people a long time ago altered the bible and we are being just as silly by how we interpret it. The best way I can think to describe this would be Amelia Bedelia. If you do not know Amelia Bedelia she is a fictional childbook character that takes everything literally. "Draw the curtains" she draws an actually picture of the curtains. "Dress the turkey" she literally puts clothes on the turkey. Silly stuff like that. You recognize this as silly though you do not recognize that you do the same. The bible is a book. It is bound and reprinted all over the world and has fantastic morals and messages but we take the stories literally. I'm just waiting for someone to go plant some seeds in rocky soil or good soil and determine their life from that. They're meant to be stories. They are meant to guide you to right decisions of love. I look at the bible like I look at Frog and Toad books. A story with a message than I can abstractly apply to my life.
Don't be Amelia Bedelia and live biblically. Be like God and just live.
That's why I loathe "Hell Houses" too. If I can't get you to be Christian by inviting you to come to my church, by God I'll scare you into believing. Whatev. Hate fear mongering.
