The Chore of Praise & Worship

So at churches I've come to realize I give off a very bad vibe during their worship time. Praise and Worship has never been enjoyable for me and it is not because of the actual worship itself! I'm all for that definitely. I've nothing against God (me and that dude are actually pretty good pals) or anything against church.. okay I take that one back. But I absolutely hate church music. I hate it. It's not my style of music at all so I have a really hard time enjoying it. I've put in a little video to listen to while you read this so you kinda understand where I am coming from...
All of the songs sound the same to me. I enjoy hymns more than I enjoy this stuff. The message is great and that's not what I am getting at, it is literally the music. I know you will probably say "Well you should be able to praise God no matter what..." and you're right. So I do, but with unique bands that don't make me want to kill myself. Here are a few that I listen to that have great religions undertones and just plain good morals in their songs.
-The Avett Brothers
A lot of their songs mentions God, mention giving thanks, and all together just encourage to live right. "Teach me how to use the love that people say you made." A lot of people take that lyric a different way.. But God made love. So that's how I take it.

-Mumford and Sons
They talk a lot about a "maker" and "creator" and recognizing everything that maker/creator has done in nature and in you. "You can understand dependence when you know the maker's hand."

-Brand New
They very bluntly show Christian morals especially in their album The Devil and God are Raging Inside of Me. In their song The Archers Bows Have Broken they actually confront two-faced Christians "beating everyone with a book that book tells you to love." Good message. They also have a song called Jesus Christ and is him reaching out and asking questions like a fresh believer would.

-Manchester Orchestra
Andy Hull, the lead singer, was actually raised by a minister and had really strict music restrictions growing up so he had an edge to his music for sure.. but his childhood religion still lingers in his lyrics. He has an entire song dedicated to the second coming. They also have a song called Where Have You Been that he is very clearly talking about the Lord. It is more of a bitter song when he asks "God, where have you been?" but does hold the religious undertone nonetheless.

So, for all of you bitter towards Praise and Worship like me.. check out these bands. They are great bands and you don't have to worry about your soul deteriorating. And for all you Christian pricks that say these aren't Christian bands... you're right. But I bet God loves their music as much as I do!

  1. I like the song you chose for the post and I like that you can see God in more than the narrow "religious" music that is out there
