Curly Hair: The Cure

One topic I've become expert on is curly hair and handling it. These are just a few tricks, tips, and ideas to keep you from straightening what mama gave you!

1. Shampooing: Only shampoo your hair every other time you shower. If you feel like it does get dirty enough that it needs it more that do just a quick lather and rinse, nothing excessive and no reapplication. Too much shampooing dries out your hair and makes your curls frizzy. And ALWAYS condition.

2. Serum: After a shower I use a serum called KMS California CURL UP. I got it from ULTA for about $20.00. It can be pricey since you'll be using it daily. You can get a cheaper serum for the underside of your hair to half the cost. After a shower I shake my head violently (do in private, this action will cause teasing and stares) then apply. I've attached a link to the brands website to learn more!

3. Drying: It is preferred that you let your hair air dry (reduces frizz and is just healthier), but if you're in a hurry that you can purchase a diffuser. It is a special dryer made specifically for people like us with curly hair. You can buy the entire dryer or you can buy a snap on top to the blow dryer you already have! I've attached a link to Amazon.com for the Conair Universal fit diffuser. Cheap and easy!

4. Touch-Ups: Sometimes through out the day I don't care for how the curls fell and I've somewhere to be that night, so I'll touch up my hair with a little curling wand action. ADVICE: You don't need an actual wand, a regular old curling iron will do. ALSO: Don't set the temp. high... you already have curly hair therefore the curl will hold. You also only need to keep your hair wrapped around the wand for maybe4 second. IT WILL HOLD. I promise. We don't want them to look unnatural.

Quick Tips:
1. Don't touch your hair constantly while it's wet, that only adds frizz.
2. The shaking method I explained in bullet 2 is to separate the hair and let it find it's natural part, really helps and means you don't have to comb.
3. NEVER BRUSH. This is damaging to your hair. If you need to, get a plastic brush to comb through your hair while under the water in the shower, but once your hair starts to dry... no ma'am. If you really insist do it the moment you get out of the shower... I've just found my curls don't look quite the same if I do.
